The AVE high-speed train that will link Mecca and Medina successfully completes its inaugural test run

January 1, 2018

  • Abengoa Inabensa is part of the consortium which comprises Spanish companies commissioned to construct the high-speed line in Saudi Arabia.

January 1, 2018 – Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructures, energy and water sectors, recently celebrated the successful inaugural test run of the ‘Desert AVE’ (for Alta Velocidad Española, or Spanish High Speed), which will connect the cities of Mecca and Medina, and in which the company participates through its subsidiary Abengoa Inabensa.

Abengoa Inabensa is part of the Spanish consortium Al Shoula, which comprises twelve Spanish companies (ADIF, Cobra, Consultrans, Copasa, Dimetronic, Imathia, Inabensa, Ineco, Indra, OHL, Renfe and Talgo) and two Saudi companies: Al Shoula and Al Rosan, and is responsible for the construction of the high-speed line that will link these cities in Saudi Arabia.

Abengoa is responsible for the detailed engineering, supply, assembling, testing, commissioning and maintenance -over a 12-year period- for the necessary electrification works for more than 235 km of catenary, in addition to two substations, ten auto-transformation centers and more than 30 technical buildings distributed along the route, all of which have been designed so that trains can travel at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

The inaugural test run was carried out between the cities of Mecca and Medina on December 31, and the AVE train completed its route in two hours and 52 minutes, without making any stops.

This project helps to consolidate the role of Abengoa Inabensa in the international rail sector. On a national level, the company has spearheaded the creation of ‘The Railway Innovation Hub,’ which is an alliance of Spanish companies whose main aim is to promote innovation in this sector.
